Welcome to the Homestead Blog Hop!
Crazy morning over here on our off grid homestead.
We have several backups, but yesterday I managed to run the batteries to the ground, and that was a big problem. Way bigger than I could have known!
That said, we had a very dark night, which I actually enjoyed. So glad we have the wood stove! We were toasty warm and slept very well!
With an intensive consult with a solar expert, we are charging with the generator, and anticipating some sunshine today!
This definitely makes me think about several things. One—don’t run the batteries so low, and two, what backups do we all have for when the power goes off?
We have oil lamps and rechargeable flashlights, and I don’t consider that we were even living rough at all. But that was just overnight. Fridges and freezers need power, so we just have to plan for interruptions, as they will come to all at some point.
I put up our Christmas tree yesterday, and that is one reason for the power gulp. I do believe it’s time to switch to led bulbs, and to not live like we didn’t just have a very dark and cloudy day!

Homestead Blog Hop will take place every Wednesday and is for all things homesteading: real food recipes, farm animals, crafts, DIY, how-to’s, gardening, anything from-scratch, natural home/health, self-sufficiency, self-reliance, natural remedies, essential oils, & more! Basically, anything related to homesteading.

Dear Laurie,
Thank you so much for hosting!
Have blessed days to come
XO Daniela
Yes, power outages do come to all, we had a week without power a few years ago after a horrific storm but we weren’t the worst off. So many didn’t even have water for that period of time as well. We lost the contents of fridge & freezer that we couldn’t consume but people lost houses. It definitely gets you active in backups after that though!
Thank you for hosting.
Blessings, Jennifer
Happy December, Laurie! Sounds like you had quite a start to your day yesterday! YIKES! The things we take for granted! Thanks so much for hosting us all! I always love stopping by to see what you, your cohosts and so many others have been up to – especially during this festive season! We’re sharing #20 and #21 this week. Wishing you a great start to a brand new month!
