Welcome to the Homestead Blog Hop!
I forgot
Not just a little, but totally.
It’s almost 3 pm and while the Blog Hop starts at 6 am, here I am just thinking about it.
My mind has been occupied in my gardens. We’re not talking fancy gardens, but our family vegetable gardens. Plural, because we have carved several small plots out of our hillside, not having any real flat area for a large garden space.
That said, these gardens have been my companions this week. I’m proud of my main area, and dismayed at my other two terraces, since the weeds moved in to stay. Because I am so stubborn, and cannot abide the thought of uprooting tender seedlings, I have spent my mornings painstakingly trying to evict the Bermuda grass while saving every spindly volunteer basil plant—and there are way more than we will ever need!
I have made good progress, but every day I get the strong message that my red-hair/fair skin combo and constitution simply do not handle the blazing sun as well as I wished it would. So, my habit has been, work feverishly until I almost feel like collapsing, at which time I call a retreat for the moment. I then spend he rest of the day trying to hydrate and replenish my electrolytes, all the while wondering how in the world I ended up with every simply muscle in my poor body throbbing, only to rejuvenate with the new day and repeat it all again.
I certainly hope that your gardens are less demanding than mine, but generally they are a fussy type of hobby.
I almost always come inside and sometime in the day I marvel at my lack of desire to do the exercise program I planned. Truthfully, these days, my body screams NO, and I tell myself that gardening is indeed exercise, and of the sweat-inducing variety!

I recently saw this image and call it to mind whenever I need a good excuse to count gardening as multitasking exercise. They forgot to list the wheel hoe and the bare hands, which are my preferred garden tools.

My feet are perpetually brown and ugly, my fingernails have caked dirt underneath, and the proverbial green thumb really is a thing—I know because I have it! Diligent soaking and scrubbing has proven fruitless—my garden era is firmly in place.
Ugly feet and hands aside, I am loving it, and I hope that you, also, are finding joy and exercise in whatever garden space you possess.
Until next time, I’ll be hanging out with the weeds and things, always hoping for a bright new day, filled with red tomatoes and purple eggplant.
