Riding the Virginia Creeper Trail 🚲

So on Sunday, as planned, our family joined our church group in Damascus, Virginia, to ride the Creeper Trail. I wrote about this on 🚲 Sunday Sunshine Blog Hop 🚴, with some links that included some interesting history about the trail.

Sunday was actually cloudy all day, but that just made the colors more bright. We rode through the first tunnels, and over the wooden or metal train trestles and bridges.

Our boys arrived before we did, and rode uphill most of the seventeen miles to where we got shuttled at the top of White Top Mountain. We took the easy way, all downhill, at a railroad grade, which usually travels at about 1-2% grade, closer to 1%. That made for a very enjoyable time, mostly coasting, but sometimes pedaling to keep our momentum. I definitely could feel it in my upper legs, so I did do enough pedaling!

Know where else I felt it, along with everyone else? My backside! That had some sensations that don’t normally scream out for attention, but I’m already feeling fine, so nothing major.

Thirty four or thirty-five people from our group rode, and we all enjoyed the day! The boys and a couple of their friends got much more of a workout, but still survived. We saw one person who had to be carried out by ambulance (bike flipped), and one more lady down on the ground, apparently from exhaustion.

If you ever get the chance to ride the Creeper, do it! You can rent a bike if you don’t have one, and it’s not too expensive to do that.

We loved it–and this was the perfect time of the year to ride, with all of the colors popping.

Here are some pictures from our ride.

Have a great day!!
