Cabin Update and Homestead Blog Hop 403

I’m glad you came out again to check out the blog hop!

It wouldn’t be here without you!

This week, around our homestead, we are mostly working inside. Trying to hit the plumbing, learning a little every day, and working on the ceilings and joists.

I’ve been sanding, bleaching water stains, sanding some more, then eventually, sealing the wood joists/exposed beams and wood ceilings.

That’s been fun, figuring out what everyone likes. 😵‍💫

Let’s just say we have a houseful of people, and each one likes something different. That makes it tough. For instance, I like a satin finish, Greg loves shine. Greg prefers the yellow/golden hue, and I prefer walnut and natural hickory–very different tastes. Throw the boys in and it gets more confusing.

I agreed to try the pantry with the high shine polyurethane. I will say that it did improve the look of the wood, but I’m hesitant to do the whole house in that very golden shiny coat. It is easier, though, to do it all one color.

Here’s me putting a second coat on today.

I went ahead and tried our room with a poly acrylic, which is crystal clear. I love it on the hickory, because it keeps the natural look, and on the pine beams it’s just, meh. Doesn’t bring out any color, but it also doesn’t make them more yellow.

So…we are complicated.

I told you on Sunday that I have trouble with decisions. Still do.

The guys are making progress with plumbing. Little by little.

We are keeping a fridge running on the solar. Greg’s testing how much power it’s using, as it’s an older one. We probably have to get an Energy Star rated one. But I will tell you that having a full size (not huge, just bigger than our RV size that we’ve used for almost 4 yrs) fridge it making life seem way nicer. Way nicer.

The cats are doing well. Charlie will leap onto your shoulder if he takes a notion and you’re within four feet of him.

Chum (what I’ve now named the black kitten) is a real sweetie. He’s very loyal. Hardly ever purrs, but every once in awhile, he revs up his motor.

Stinker keeps catching frogs and lizards, moles and an occasional mouse. I have to admit that I forget to praise her prowess sometimes. 🥴

I’ll catch you up on the others another time, but they’re all doing well.

Here’s a sample of the tomatoes Greg’s growing. He has many colors. And, of course, a sunflower. If you’ve ever heard of Fibonacci numbers, you can really see that pattern here in this sunflower. God is so amazing!
