Priorities

Priority jars

Today is just a slice out of my ordinary, everyday life

Our to-do lists will never end. Seems there will always be more to do than I can finish in a day.

So much to do!

It’s the story of our lives!

But we don’t have all the time in the world.

So for today, I had to prioritize to get the main things in.

The image below is not my own, but it does illustrate the need for us to make sure that we add the “priorities” first, and try to fit the extras in after that, not the other way around.  I will admit that my life is generally like the first jar.  😢

The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. – Stephen Covey

So what is the mail thing?

Ordinary responsibilities first

I decided I’d catch up on my household chores–dishes, tidy up, change sheets, hang clothes from weekend, refresh the bathroom.

Personal Time

Then I took some personal improvement time.

I took a walk up the hill twice, enjoyed time out in nature, all the whole reflecting on what is important to me. At the top of my list was time with family. So, for me, that’s my main thing today.

Grown-Up Christmas List

Today I made a Grown-Up Christmas list (more on that later). I just realized that I don’t mind if I don’t get presents–I would enjoy some gifts of time and togetherness, though, and those are the sort of suggestions on my Christmas wish list.

The Main Thing: Prioritize Family

Family picture.
A rare photo of all of us!

Today I used my time to make cookies for my boy who’s going away for school today. I’m sending love through homemade goodies. There’s nothing that says home like your own mom’s (or grandma’s) baking. I made the Healthier No Bake Cookies recipe today, and then packed him and his roommate a plate with those and the Salted Caramel Date Fudge , which we made into balls. A sweet treat can make the mundane days a little sweeter!

Hitting the Road

We had not much more time after cookie making and eating. Took care of some home and family business, then Austin and I headed out towards school.

A 2.5 hour trip, because of returning Thanksgiving traffic, turned into a disaster. Currently, we are sitting in non-moving traffic, 30 miles from our exit. Estimated driving time to get there is over two hours! Imagine that!

We are getting in some good conservation, though. Austin let me read a harrowing essay that he wrote about the day he lost his fingers. It pained me to read that and relive that horrible day, but I applaud him for the lessons he’s learned and life applications he’s been able to find through that difficult experience.

All in all, this day has been good. We’ve spent time together with some family members, accomplished a few things, and have stayed safe. I know that life is changing with my boys. For this reason, I cherish the times we spend together.

And I hope we get to our exit soon!

God bless, thanks for reading, and best wishes on finding your main thing for the time you have!

Leave me a comment and let me know what you’re prioritizing in life these days!

    1. Absolutely for growing your business. As long as that doesn’t usurp family time. As he also says, “Mo one on their death bed says, ‘I’m so glad I spent all of that time at work’”. Paraphrased by me. You get the picture.

  1. I’m so sorry you got caught in such a horrible traffic jam! I am prioritizing time with my family. As our boy-men prepare to launch into this wide world within the next couple years, I want to make memories, to laugh, to talk with them. As I have time, I am also working on writing projects.

What is your experience? 💜 I read every comment, and so many times I find that I gain encouragement from what’s shared. ❤️
